PTI leader Bushra Bibi receives notice from the court in a case involving a ‘illegal marriage’

Bushra Bibi::

KARACHI – On Tuesday, a district and sessions court in the nation’s capital declared the “illegal” marriage of former prime minister Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi to be acceptable in court.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman and his wife were handed summons by Civil Judge Qudratullah, who had reserved the judgement the day before, requiring them to appear in court on July 20.

Earlier, Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) Islamabad Muhammad Azam Khan had overturned a previous civil court’s ruling declaring a petition contesting the legitimacy of the marriage inadmissible and returned the matter to a civil judge.

Muhammad Hanif, the petitioner, said that Bushra Bibi’s ex-husband granted her a divorce in November 2017 and that she married Imran Khan on January 1 of 2018 while still in her iddat period, which is against Sharia and Muslim customs.

The petitioner gave testimony in court from the marriage’s officiant, Mufti Muhammad Saeed, and from Imran’s close friend and wedding witness, Awn Chaudhry. With the assurance of a lady claiming to be Bushra Bibi’s sister, Mufti Saeed acknowledged that he had solemnised the Nikah between Imran and Bushra on January 1, 2018. Imran Khan then requested Saeed to perform the Nikah solemnization once more in February 2018, claiming that the initial ceremony had violated Shariah since Bushra Bibi’s iddat had not yet come to an end.
