Ancelotti’s high court complaint against Everton may be motivated by a problem.
The celebrated coach Carlo Ancelotti, who is suing his former team Everton, had talks with a contentious Russian tycoon about a series of incentive payments that were based on Everton’s success in the Premier League.
According to insiders, the bonuses were suggested around the time when Ancelotti was in discussions to become the manager of Everton in 2019. The Russian-Uzbek billionaire Alisher Usmanov. The implication raises concerns about whether Ancelotti’s action against Everton at London’s high court was motivated by a potential side agreement between him and Usmanov.
The discussions will further heighten the ongoing mystery surrounding Usmanov’s suspected influence on Farhad Moshiri, the owner of Everton, since football authorities and supporters are sure to be interested in any individual other than a club’s owner or directors providing incentives to a coach.
Usmanov’s spokesperson stated: “In his personal interactions with Mr. Ancelotti, Mr. Usmanov discussed the speculative possibility of creating an additional bonus fund for the club in the event that the latter achieved a significant success, namely, entering the League of Champions [sic], an event that, as we know, did not ultimately take place. Mr. Usmanov is the largest shareholder of the club’s primary sponsor. In this sense, no legally significant agreements were established, and the club’s accomplishments hardly even qualified as successes.
Additional sources told the Guardian that the high court action relates to a bonus that Ancelotti thinks he arranged with someone outside the team, and that one goal may have included a top-half finish, which Ancelotti accomplished in the 2020–21 season. The Italian, who is currently the coach of Real Madrid, was “promised something… and it now clearly hasn’t gone away,” according to one former Everton director.
Everton’s position, it is understood, is that no bonus payments were offered on the club’s behalf, and that the club would not have approved any such payments.

Ancelotti’s legal challenge, which, according to the claim made in court, pertains to “general commercial contracts and arrangements,” was originally covered by the Guardian on June 12.
As a result of the resignations of three directors last week, the club’s board currently consists of only the chairman, Bill Kenwright, and is thus just one member strong.
Even though none of the directors have been replaced more than a week later, the club has released a statement that appears to indicate that fresh appointments are about to come.
The relationships between Usmanov and Moshiri have long been the subject of debate. A number of managers, who claimed they were interviewed for the top position in the oligarch’s presence, raised new concerns about Everton’s ownership in January.
The Home Office prohibited Usmanov from visiting the UK in 2021, at a time when significant Everton sponsors included businesses in which he was the largest stakeholder. When asked if the club had infringed any laws or Premier League rules, the club said that it was aware that Usmanov had been denied entry to the UK.
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2014, the Foreign Office placed sanctions on Usmanov after Everton declared it had severed connections with the businessman.
He pledged to defend the Foreign Office citation, which he described as “false and defamatory allegations damaging my honour, dignity, and business reputation,” when the sanctions were announced in March 2022.
The oligarch “has always carefully observed the Premier League’s rules and legal requirements,” Usmanov’s representative claimed in response to the Guardian’s inquiries concerning bonuses and Ancelotti. He has never made any judgements for FC Everton and never could.
Ancelotti, Moshiri, and Everton declined to comment to the Guardian.
