The Tour de France’s fifth stage, the first mountainous one, was won by Australian Jai Hindley, who also assumed the yellow jersey’s position as the race’s overall leader.

Last year’s Giro d’Italia champion Hindley beat a pack that featured 2022 Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard on Wednesday by 32 seconds.

Adam Yates, a British competitor who finished minutes later, relinquished the yellow shirt to him. After Rohan Dennis in 2015, he became the first Australian to take the Tour by storm.

Hindley now has a 47-second advantage over Vingegaard in the overall standings. The 2020 and 2021 Tour champion, Tadej Pogacar, lost time on Thursday and is currently 1:40 behind Hindley.

After the two favourites, Vingegaard and Pogacar, who had won the previous Tour, Hindley entered the race as one of the top overall contenders.

Stage 6 of this year’s Tour, the first of four summit finishes, resumes in the Alps.
