The majority of franchise quarterbacks are selected in the first round of each and every draught. Some appear later on in the procedure.
The Eagles selected their current franchise quarterback in the second round, four years after moving up to the second overall choice in the draught to acquire their potential franchise quarterback.
Dan Pompei examines the decision-making process used by Philadelphia to consider and eventually choose Jalen Hurts. It began as a reflection of the fundamental truth that having a capable backup to the starter is crucial (as the Eagles discovered by winning Super Bowl LII).
Over the more than 20 years that Roseman has spent in Philadelphia, “no team has probably benefited more from the backup quarterback position than the Philadelphia Eagles,” he told Pompei. That’s how the Eagles marketed it to Carson Wentz, but he struggled with it and left Philadelphia following Hurts’ first season.
According to Roseman, it was almost like to saying, “Hey, we committed to you, you got the money, but this could also benefit you.” “One of our scouts really puts it beautifully. If you become sick and miss two games, the outcome of those two games—whether we win 2-0, draw 1-1, or lose 0-2—determines whether we get home-field advantage. Therefore, we must be ready for those games.
Hurts entering the game in round two may have made Wentz feel even worse. However, the Eagles were uncomfortable waiting to choose Hurts, as they had done eight years prior when they failed to select Russell Wilson, who was selected in the third round. (They decided on Nick Foles, who later won the Super Bowl MVP during a second tenure with the Eagles.)
When we attempt to get charming with quarterbacks we admire, we have learnt from the Russell incident, Roseman added. You can never lose money by selecting quarterbacks. Nothing is more significant.
They resolved to take no chances, according to former Eagles coach Doug Pederson.
“Perhaps we had a better team on him than the others. We decided to accept him in the second since we were at ease. In our industry, you can usually tell whether a player is good without any persuasion. He served as that person for us. When we did decide to accept him, we were overjoyed. You can see that he is doing just as we predicted.
The Eagles’ team manager felt at ease with the strategy.

Prior to free agency, Lurie said through Pompei earlier this year, organisations allowed quarterbacks three, four, or five years to mature.
“I remember watching football growing up as a kid, and teams gave quarterbacks three, four, or five years to develop,” Lurie said. And that brings us back to the idea of selecting players who have the drive for greatness, the intellect to be great, and the talent — the throwing ability, the running ability, and the team-oriented attitude — rather than just those who are immediately ready to play in the NFL at a very high level. For us, it was kind of a no-brainer, but at the time, it was a very controversial choice.
Three years in Hurts is thriving right now. Even though the Eagles weren’t expecting it, last year they allegedly looked into dealing for Russell Wilson. Before Kyler Murray agreed to his second deal with the Cardinals, there was talk of interest in him as well.
Roseman said of Hurts, “I think you saw [last season] the things we saw in him back then.” He was in his second year of service and was following all instructions. He comprehends everything, and this young man is an absolute winner. It was what we observed.

The thing to watch, though, is this. The Eagles will continually search for new quarterbacks. Marcus Mariota is now Hurts’ backup for one or two games. They’ll eventually choose someone and start working on him. And if Hurts allows the presence of a prospective successor to change his perception of the Eagles (like Wentz did), it may have an effect on their attitude towards Hurts.
To be honest, Wentz seemed to have a distinct wiring than Hurts, who appeared to have a unique wiring pattern. Hurts doesn’t feel entitled in any way. Hurts appears to be aware that he must continually work for what he has and that, if he gives the team any cause to think otherwise, any player’s standing will become transient.
The ideal case scenario for the Eagles is to have a reliable starter and a capable backup, who can be either a seasoned quarterback or a young quarterback who develops and can eventually be traded for more draught picks to select the next backup. With the continual awareness that any of those backups may theoretically emerge as the upcoming quarterback to receive the QB1 moniker.
