PV Sindhu’s birthday: A look back at the badminton career of the double Olympian

Today, PV Sindhu—the bright star of Indian women’s badminton—celebrates her 28th birthday. Pusarla Venkata, a sports legend who was born in 1995, has won several championships and, as a result, has shot to the top of the international rankings in recent years. The Hyderabadi girl made history by being the first Indian woman to win both a gold and a silver medal at the BWF World Championships.

She entered the top 20 BWF global rankings list when she was 17 years old, and ever then, she has been in the top 10. However, in the most current BWF World rankings for women’s singles, her position fell to 15.

The Padma Bhushan recipient was also ranked by Forbes Magazine as the highest-paid female Indian athlete.

She received the Padma Shri award, one of India’s highest civilian honours, at the age of 20, making history as the nation’s youngest recipient of the award.

In the women’s singles final of the Singapore Open 2022 BWF Super 500, Wang Zhi Yi of China was beaten by Sindhu. The two-time Olympic medalist at the time ranked eighth in the world in badminton.

Sindhu won a gold medal in the mixed team competition at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and a silver medal in the women’s singles.

PV Sindhu and Harmanpreet Singh were given the honour of carrying the Indian flag during the opening ceremony of the 2022 CWG Birmingham.

Sindhu reached a new milestone in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio as she earned the Silver medal.
