Bangladesh is down two wickets after Taijul’s five-for dispatches Ireland for 214 runs.

Bangladesh:

Bangladesh bowled Ireland out for 214 in the first innings of the one-off Test in Dhaka, dominating Ireland’s first day back in Test cricket. Taijul Islam claimed his eleventh five-wicket haul as the six-man bowling assault maintained their lead in most circumstances. The host team finished the day with a score of 34 for 2, with Tamim Iqbal falling to Andy McBrine off the final delivery.

McBrine, on the other hand, got one to kick at Tamim’s forward push, take the edge, and soar to second slip, where Mark Adair made the grab. In the first over, he dismissed Najmul Hossain Shanto with an in-ducker, the ball clipping the inside edge on to the stumps. With the late wicket on an otherwise challenging day, Ireland’s players were cock-a-hoop.

Ireland scored 214 in their first innings, their best in Tests, boxing out all but 30 minutes of the first day’s play. It wasn’t a bad performance in the challenging circumstances of the Shere Bangla National Stadium for a batting line-up that included six debutants and was playing a Test after four years.

Harry Tector’s fifty included some delicious strokes, especially his drives down the ground. He also hit a straight six, but succumbed after 74 runs for the fourth wicket with Curtis Campher. It was the pinnacle of Ireland’s innings, with the duo hitting some spectacular shots in the first hour of the second session. Ireland was at its most comfortable during this period, but it took about an hour for things to shift for the tourists.

After Ireland dropped three wickets in the first period, they came together. Murray Commins was out lbw for five after Shoriful Islam delivered a ball that sliced back into his bat. After the batter edged Ebadot Hossain, Shanto captured James McCollum at second slip on the second try.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz bowled Tector with a perfect offbreak turning through his forward push to terminate the Tector-Campher combination. Tector scored 50 off 92 balls, hitting six fours and one six. Ireland also lost PJ Moor, who was playing his first Test for Ireland after eight matches for Zimbabwe, and Campher in the span of eighteen deliveries.

Ireland could have succumbed early after being reduced to 124 for 6, but they added another 90 runs for the last four wickets. Taijul finished his five-for by removing Tucker and Adair. Mehidy ended the game in the 78th over with Ben White’s wicket.
